Innocence

I wrote this song a number of years ago, not sure what was the catalyst that had me penning it but it still moves me each time I read over it.

Innocence

She woke up, bright and early
It was her thirteenth birthday
Looking forward to her day
No idea of what lay in store

Chorus:
A child bride she will be
Her childhood murdered
Her innocence destroyed

Her mother was nervous
Watching her little girl play in the sun
Knowing what's going to happen
- because it happened to her

Chorus

He had been looking forward to this day
He had been watching her, closely
He'd spoken to her father and the price was set
As was the date

Chorus

Her mother got her dressed
in her pretty
new white dress
She grew suspicious of what was to come
Her mother didn't cry often, not like this

Chorus

She arrived at the church
Holding her mother's hand
Her father there waiting
With that man she'd seen watching her
She realized why her mother was crying

Chorus

She started crying knowing what was to come
Her childhood over, a wife she would become
To a man who was nearly three times her age

A child bride she has become
Her childhood murdered
Her innocence destroyed
